Health Research Services

Located in the Research Triangle Park area of North Carolina, Applied Environmental's Health Research Services Division offers support to the growing human health research and biotechnology industries. The Health Research Division provides support for international industry programs in clinical and environmental laboratory performance evaluation (PE), proficiency testing (PT), and laboratory accreditation.

Applied Environmental, Inc. Health Research Services Division supports the American Industrial Hygiene Association (AIHA) and Environmental Microbiology Proficiency Analytical Testing (EMPAT)through maintenance and administration of the program by coordinating sample provision, and management services, providing web-based support of online testing, and assisting AIHA with progressive program development from performance evaluation, to proficiency testing, to laboratory accreditation. This unique program focuses on laboratories' abilities to isolate and identify environmental fungi and bacteria of occupational and public health significance.

In order to provide a proficiency analytical testing program for laboratories using direct microscopic analysis techniques for spore identification, in 2005 AIHA added a new component to the EMPAT program for Fungal Direct Examination. This new web-based program allows laboratories primarily performing spore trap analysis to establish proficiency and improve performance in the microscopic analysis of environmental samples and will also support the accreditation program currently in place for fungal spore identification. On a quarterly basis laboratories have access to 20 digital images for the identification of spores as well as non-fungal particulates. At the conclusion of each round, a laboratory's testing results are summarized and displayed with thumbnails of the images. Our mission is to provide laboratory performance evaluation, proficiency testing, and accreditation program support through experienced personnel utilizing quality procedures.
