Applied Environmental is a Herndon, Virginia based Woman-owned, Small Business providing professional Environmental, Industrial Hygiene, Occupational Safety, and Health consulting services to both the private sector and government clients. Incorporated in 1986, by David O’Konski, CIH, CSP and Jana Ambrose, a husband and wife team, our firm, with a staff of multi-discipline environmental professionals, has demonstrated long term client service, with rapid response to metropolitan Washington, DC, Virginia, Maryland, and surrounding areas. With David O’Konski’ s passing in 2021, Jana Ambrose has continued to serve our clients with the same long term staff of professionals under our motto, which she coined, “Endeavor for Quality – Achieve Excellence”
We offer complete Indoor Air Quality evaluations, including proactive and reactive surveys, as well as typical microbial (mold and fungal) Ricin, Anthrax, and COVID waste stream testing Our full service Industrial Hygiene (IH) Division performs OSHA compliance monitoring, such as noise, dust, chemical, and other IH support services.
We offer extensive hazardous materials management project experience. This includes hazardous material surveys (e.g. asbestos, lead paint, polychlorinated biphenyls (PCB) and mercury-containing articles), project design and specifications, abatement monitoring, and cost estimating. Our project monitoring experience encompasses project documentation and management of work performed by abatement contractors and includes mission critical 24/7 occupied government facilities and Air Route Traffic Control Centers and commercial facilities.

Applied Environmental, based in Herndon, Virginia, provides environmental science and engineering, industrial hygiene and safety consulting support to private sector and government clients. Incorporated in 1986, the firm started with two founding Principals, having demonstrated continuous growth with now over 30 employees. The goal of Applied Environmental is to respond to the needs of our clients quickly and cost effectively while delivering exceptional quality. Over 30 years after our inception, we continue to provide our clients, many of whom we’ve served for over 25 years, with exceptional quality services utilizing state-of-the-art technology and a highly qualified and experienced staff.
Our most valuable asset is our employees. We recognize and support the achievements of our staff in obtaining the professional registrations and certifications that are recognized as the standards of practice within their respective disciplines. The firm’s senior professional staff is supported by mid and junior level industrial hygienists, indoor air quality specialists, safety engineers, environmental scientists and engineers, and field technicians.
